Gambling Is A Disease
The American people have the disease of ° Gambling. We see it all around us. No sport event is complete in the eyes of many unless money is wagered on it. Nor is & money*, raising affair jtho sponsored by religious or educational groups. Our leading citizens are found encouraging our youth to take part in ^Bingo games, - cake walks, fish ponds and other gambling games ad infinitum et a! nauseam. » •
Why is gambling so popular? First because it is a perversion of God given instinct for adventure. All .of ils would like to be in the great adventurous deeds of life but many of us are not able to pay the price required in discipline of mind and body and lo we get a second hand thrill by introducing a false element of chance into anything we can. Second because it is so simple and brainless. Many of those who listened, to the World Series this year were more concerned about how many runs were made in some particular half of an inning than they were about the actual struggle of two^great teams or the wisdom of McCarthy in sending in - life relief pitcher in the right time to win the game. Most gambling games are not able .to stand up on their own fee*. They are v^ry insipid if played wihjtout gambling. The require little brainpower. Why is it that no one gambles on a game of chess? It is too slow and-requires too much thinking for a gambler!
