Rep. Harrison Named To

Ways, Means Committee

Representative Burr P. Harrison won a seat on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee January 2.

According to press dispatches, 'his endorsement for one of three Demecratic vacancies on the taxwriting group also marked a victory for rebellious Southern Democrats and a defeat for the administration.

His name was placed before the caucus by Representative Howard W. Smith, a leader of the conservative Southern Democratic group which frequently lines up with House Republicans against administration measures.

The choice of Harrison gives the* Southerners a new voice not only in tax legislation but also in selecting members of other House committees. Besides handling tax bills, the Ways and Means Committee in effect serves as the House steering committee^ Vacant seats on other House committees go to whomever is recommended by a majority of the Ways and Means Committee.
