New Amendments For
Veterans Social Security
Millions of veterans were earning Social Security when they entered the service during World War II. While in the service, they couldn’t add to their Social Security accounts. Many Veterans returned home to find that their accounts were not in force because no payments could be made during the period of service.
The 1950 amendments to the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance program give World War II veterans wage.credits of $160.00 for each month of active military or naval service performed during the war. These credits toward Social Security benefits may be used even though the Veterans Administration pays a pension or compensation. They won’t be given if the military or naval service leads to retirement benefits under any other Federal system. These wage credits go to veterafis who had at least 90 days of service between September 16, 1940 and July 24, 1947 and whose discharge or release from service was not dishonorable. These wage credits can be used in determining the amount of insurance payments due the veteran and his family when he is 65 or over and retires, to the family of a serviceman or service woman now deceased, regardless of whether death occurred in service, and to the family of « veteran if he should die.
If you are a World War II veteran these wage credits for active service may enable you to regain Social Security rights built up 'Bev* fore the iwar or to increase the benefits to your family if you should die. World War II wage credits for servicemen and servicewomen will be given at time a claim is filed.
Every survivor who lost a son, daughter or husband during or after World War 11 should check with the Social Security office as they may be entitled to Social Security payments.
