The Army said that 33.3 per cent of the inductees called up throughout ihe nation during December were rejected.
By categories, the rejections were listed as administrative, 1.4 per cent; mental, 16.9 per cent; neuropsychiatric, 1.4 per cent; -—physical,-10.4 per- -cent;- mental,, and medical combined, 3.2 per cent.
Aroused Southern leaders, including Gov. James F. Byrnes, of ■South Carolina, have investigated the problem of wholesale rejections and found its roots in the limited education of boys 19 through 26. Those with high school education are accepted automatically if not otherwise unqualified.
A North Carolina county made an intensive study of its draft rejection cases and reported that the education factor was complicated by too much stress in reading facility in the examinations. As a result, the Pitt county, N.C., report showed skilled craftsmen with poor reading comprehension were rejected while college men were drafted as laborers.
