in Charlottesville, 179 fires have horned 1,685 acres this year. This is about 179 fires and 270 acres less than those which horned in the same period in 1950.
District Forester D. G. Wilfong, Jr., stated that so far there have been only a few small fires and there should be only an occasional one from now until the fall fire season. , .
Of the nine Virginia Forest Service Districts in the state, the three west of the Blue Ridge had a lighter year than usual, due to rain and snow Henrico and Chesterfield counties of the Richmond district had over 100 forest fires in each county, partially due to the heavy population of these counties. However, these -fires were small, usually not exceeding three to four acres each.
Chief Forest Warden Johnson said that the fire lookout tower will not be manned until some time this fall unless an emergency arises. He also said that he will be busy for a few days taking the annual tool inventory and painting and repairing the local forest wardens’ tools.

At Bridge
Miss Nancy Moore and Lide Dearing entertained a group of friends at bridge at the ohme of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Moore Saturday evening. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Claude Cook, Mr. and Mrs. Emory Russell, Mr. and Mrs. William Gilbert, Jr.t< Mr. and Mrs. John S. Browning, Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Wood, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wood, David Corbin, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Moore, Mrs. Robert Massie, and Mr. and Mrs. Lock Burford. Prizes were won by Mrs. Massie, first for ladies; Mr. Browning, for men; and Mrs. Russell, traveling prize. __

Strawberry Preserves
Pound for pound of strawberries and sugar—let stand over night, then drain the juice off the next morning, boil juice until thick—then add berries, boil three minutes and put in jars. This will give you the whole berries in your preserves.
-rfLADIES AUXILIARY MET WITH MRS. J. R. COOPER
The regular monthly meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary of Emmanuel church was held in the home of Mrs. J. R. Cooper and her daughter Mrs. Harry Trescott Wednesday evening, May 23. The meeting was called to order by the president Mrs. S. E. Hening, after which the devotional was led by Mrs. Z. H. Sealock. At the conclusion of business session refreshments were served by Mrs. Tlrescott assisted by Mrs. Jack Bruce. There were ten members* present.
