How long does it take a tree to reach maturity? Depending upon the species, it usually takes about 50 to 100 years to grow a tree from a seedling to that of sawtimber size. Therefore, you can easily see, if you cut all your timber at one time, it may be another 50 to 100 years before you again have trees of sawtimber size.
The average volume of sawtimber per. acre for the forest lands in Virginia is only 1,700 board feet, and the annual growth per acre is only 112 board feet. If this condition is permitted to continue, trees suitable for lumber will no longer exist.
