^mi'ssfatHe'iiapttst Cfcurclj * By M. E. Sliger ■ X On the present site of this church in Amissville an Episcopal Chapel stood in the year 1888. Due to the decline of that con— gregaiion the building was offered to the newly organized AmissviHe Baptist church tor the sum of $300. At the organization, under the advisory counsel of A. M. Grimsley, M. R. Grimsley and S. M, Athey the new church had its beginning on December 29, 1888. At this meeting S. M. Athey acted as moderator and A. C. Jennings was elected acting secretary. The church covenant and articles of faith were read by the acting secretary and 36 charter members were received. The membership was composed of twenty-six members from Gourd vine Baptist church, three from Jefferson, and two each from Culpeper, and Orleans* and one from Long Branch Baptist church. One other was received upon his statement of faith and previous baptism. Mrs. Hugh Bywaters of Korea, is the only living charter member of the church.
A year later the church had grown to a membership of ninety- * one and became a member of the Shiloh Association, General AsL_ sociation of Virginia and the Southern Baptist Convention.s
The congregation elected M. R. Grimsley as first pastor January 17, 1889 and the first deacons were B. H. Spilman, William Doyle and O. M. Corbin.
