o o o Down in Roanoke recently the newspaper carried a story about a reporter having walked oh the streets and asked about 200 persons at random who their representative in Congress was. Sixty per cent of them did not know Clarence <3. Burton’s nameor else they could not remember it at the time. Such a thing could not happen to us in Rappahannock. There are several reasons, a few of which might be these: Representative Harrison is a familiar sight in the county, in addition to his annual trip to every post office, and he keeps in close touch with his people.
However, the street query was hardly a fair sampling of public opinion. This can be understood by anyone. Picture yourself walking down the street—mind occupied, intent upon what you are doing-and someone stops you and asks some question such as the one. “Who is your representative in Congress?”
If you answered quickly, it might be “Remember to get two 60-watt light bulbs’’ or some other item you had on your mind at the moment.
It brings to mind-an old story told of school days. Eleanor and Pete were sitting in the back of the class room matching pennies. The professor was calling the roll. They were so engrossed in what they were doing that they did not hear their names. The professor Cleared his throat and called the lady’s name loudly. She straightened up quickly and her answer rang clear in the quiet room, “Tails!”
