Against Army Worm
The current outbreak of army worm is rather serious but prompt use of proven control will keep damage within bounds the department of agriculture has informed Representative Burr P. Harrison. Mr. Harrison talked with officials of the Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine in Washington, D. C. and with Dr. H. N. Young, director of Va. Extension at Blacksburg.
After receiving report of work on the pest in sections of the 7th Congressional district, application of the proper insecticide as soon as the army worm is noticed is essential in preventing destruction of crops, Mr. Harrison said he was told. Approximately 1A lbs. of toxathene per acre or three to 5 lbs. of DDT per acre is an effective agent against army worms, according to department of agriculture. When the pest has invaded a field of standing small grain aerial spraying or dusting is recommended, although lower type applicator§ aimed from the edges can give reasonably good coverage of small fields.
Orchard spraying equipment also could be brought into* use in an emergency, it was suggested.
Careful spraying along the edges of corn or small grain usually will protect the crop from army worm if they are noticed before they have gotten into the crop, it was stated.
Mr. Harrison said Dr. Young told him all County agents have information on control of this fast-moving pest and will advise farmers on spray materials and application technique.
