If it should appear, when the picture is fully before us, that our air power under the new program would be measurably below that of Russia, my own preference would be to provide more funds for our air defense and cut-the amount proposed for a foreign land army in Europe. Decision of the Republican Policy Committee last week to strike Hawaiian Statehood and Taft-Hartley Act amendments from the list of legislation which “must” be acted on at this session greatly* increases the prospects of an -early summer adjournment. The objections to present Statehood for Hawaii including recent evidence of Communist infiltration and a reduction in the white ' population which already was down! to sixteen percent were bound to bediscussed at length in the Senate while the views of groups seeking to strengthen the Taft-Hartley Act and those seeking to weaken it are so far apart that they could neither be reconciled nor compromised without another long debate.
