Sdiool Principal Runs
drnival During Summer
Merle A. Beam, owner of Beam’s Attractions, coming nexl week to George Wood’s lot, is principal of Windber, Pa., high school during the winter, but from June through August he travels with his show.
Mr. and Mrs. Beam travel with the show and the local sponsoring organization (in Rappahannock it’s the V.F.W.) furnishes ticket takers at the rides and shows.
Mr. Beam started in this business 25 years ago. In trying to get carnivals for school activities, he found them often unsuitable, so he began ^buying rides and operating them himself. The show grew. His school serves as his base of operations. Each year the show; and he explains that it is not run like a carnival, plays first to the students before going on the road. His performers come from all over. One, Bobo, the clown, appeared on the Arthur Godfrey ice show with his skating rooster. Now Bobo and his trained animals play a large part in the side show. Bobo is only one of the 40 people who travel with the show through Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware doing one-week stands for civic organizations.
