It was a friendly crowd. The local people were having a good time themselves; and they felt their responsibility of being host to visitors from other communities. The results are good. The firemen made some much-needed money; the rest of the town’s citizens are proud of the firemen for their hard work and for the success of the carnival; the spirit of cooperation shown on all sides is reward in itself.
The firemen did not beg for a cent. They announced that they would welcome donations, but this announcement was made through the newspaper and not one soul was asked for anything. They did not beg from the merchants. Prizes and materials were bought. They went to the merchants telling them that they wanted to buy articles and that a percentage of reduction would be appreciated. Most of the merchants were so shocked at not being asked to give that they stood aghast—and then usually gave some extras after the buying was done.
