Tomorrow will be the birthday anniversary of one, the famous Doctor Samuel Johnson. The great lexicographer would be 244 years old if he were still living; fortunately, he isn’t for it’s generally believed the stickler of English usage would have had so many attacks of apoplexy with all this modern butchering of the King’s language that the torture would have given someone excuse to put him out of his misery.
Dr. Johnson was no more popular in his time than his famous dictionary is today.. You’ve heard, of course, of the man who said the dictionary was a very interesting book, but didn’t seem to have much of a plot. Then, too, there are always the people who explained that there’s no use trying to use a dictionary, since you have to know how to spell a word before you can find it; and if you already know how to spell it, there’s no use looking up a word. I’m not an authority on the dictionary, myself, having failed to use it as prodigiously as is
