Hospital Shortage Exists For Tuberculosis Patients
Hospital facilities for treatment of tuberculosis patients in Virginia are acutely short, especially for negroes, it was pointed out recently by Dr. Charles W. Scott, Superintendent and Medical Director of Piedmont sanatorium. The Piedmont hospital which is located" at Burkeville is at present the only state hospital for negro patients.
“We are now admitting men whose applications were received in December 1952 and women who applied in February 1953,” Dr. Scott said. “I get urgent telephone calls and letters from people every day stating that these patients are in crowded homes where it is practically impossible to isolate them,” he continued.
The State Department of Health operates three tuberculosis sanatoria at present. In addition to Piedmont, hospitals are located at Catawba and Charlottesville. At present a total of 950 patients are being hospitalized by the three institutions.
