WELFARE—From Page 1 Buntin said. Greater employment of older people, as well as full employment and high' incomes of many of their children, is also responsible for some of this decline, the superintendent pointed out.
General relief cases were lower during September than at any time since the beginning of the program. Last month’s records showed 1,847 cases,t a drop from 4,771 in September 1950, the month before the aid to the disabled program was begun.
Many of the cases formerly aided through relief are now on the disabled program, according to the superintendent. Aid to the permanently and totally disabled, begun in October 1950 with federal funds, has increased from 1145 cases the first month to 4.015 cases during September 1953.
Foster care cases increased from 2,522 in October 1950 to 3,289 during September of this year, while aid to dependent children decreased more than 1,600 children in 800 families during the same period.
