At Mass Meeting
The Town Meeting for Better Schools met Monday night at the Rappahannock High School. The * forum panelists for the discussion were W. C. Campbell, member of the Board of Supervisors; Mrs. Dike Quaintance, principal of the Sperryville School; Q. D. Casque, Supt. of Warren and Rappahannock County Schools, Mrs. A. M. Hickman, president of R. C. H. S. P.-T. A., conduced: the meeting. An airing of our local school problem brought out an optimistic and enthusiastic group.
Financial}', the difference to the county, between a bond issue and a loan from the State Literary Fund < , was discussed. Currently, the county can borrow frrom the Literary Fund at a rate of 3%. A bond issue cannot be passed at a lower rate.
The county can obtain $165,000 from the Battle Fund. An estimate of building costs fixes the price of a new school at $250,000. The difference, or less,-is what thecountjr would have to borrow. A county loan of $75,000 woud amortize itself at the rate of $4,550 a year. This necessitates a lax levy of 17c or 18c.
The county must buy its own equipment, the state not providing funds for fihis purpose. Under school equipment comes a septic tank, * landscaping, tables, chairs, walks, etc. . <
