In this county alone the cost of removing the debris and trash from the roadways was $1,055.94. for the last 6 months Of 1953. A ' considerable amount of this trash was removed from the 53 miles of primary highways of the county. ' - Oftentimes however, the 214 miles-~of ^ secondary roads received suf-, ficient rfeuse to give them that i "trashy” effect. Although many have discontinued the practice, some trash still finds its way into the streams to await a favorable rain to wash the wastes further 4 downstream. At periods of low r water, as was experienced this past s summer, persons passing by the Thornton River in Sperryville • may have experienced both an unv wholesome appearance as well as ■ odor. -
