Need a nice purebred Black Poland China gilt or boar? If so the following 4-H club boys will have litters ready to move by mid June: Eddie Sutphin, c/o Raymond Sutphin; Charles Leake, c/o Fred Dodson', and Ivory Atkins, c/o Ivory Atkins Sr., all of Flint Hill. These pigs originated from the J. B. Terrill estate herd of Poland China believed by many to be one of the top, if not top, herds of the in Virginia.
Sears, Roebuck Foundation of Atlanta, Georgia started the project among Rappahannock 4-H’ers eight years ago and since that time production—bred boars have been used continuously that were out of large litters and of desirable meat type conformation. Farmers who in the past have purchased this blood have been exceptionally well pleased with the performance they have made in their breeding herds as well as their ability to hand up good carcasses with an ambulance of red meat.
Last week Professor Teske of Blacksburg was in the county and promptly purchased a boar from Charles Leake to head his herd of fourteen brood sows. Also last week your county agent accompanied by the swine specialist of VPI, Ralph Westing, iourned to Farmville, N. C. where two young boars were purchased from the Joe and Chris Moye herd at $40 each. One of these boars will head the Greene County 4-H Cow - Chain while the other has been placed with Walter B. Kilby, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Kilby of Woodville. The Rappahannock boar is a particularly outstanding individual and is the, son of the 1953 Junior Champion at the III. State Fair.
