At the dose of the State Convention of New Farmers of America, it was announced that the O. R. Johnson Chapter of the George Washington Carver Regional High School was again rated among the best in the State. We were rated fifth best among the 56 NFA Chapters that comprise Virginia. *
The criteria used in evaluating * chapters were based on all of die activities and accomplishments on the local, federation, and state . 'levels. The activities were as follows: public speaking, talent, i quartette, quiz, Soil and Water, 7 management Awards, Farm and Home Improvements Awards, Farm Electrification Awards, i ’ ’ Dairy Farming Awards, Farm, Mechanics Awards, Modem Farmers, Superior Farmers, H. O, Sargent Winners, judging teams, |E= offices held, newspaper articles published, radio programs conducted, State and Camp dues, delegates attending NFA Convention, and NFA camp attendance. Of this number we have or will participate in all but five.
When the State Convention convened on June 7, We were there with ten members from our chapter. This number represents the fourth largest of the 56 chapters present^ However, this quantity ^ wasn't taken for the sake of a ‘ large number, for each boyhad a, i specific duty to perform, The ten, boys were obliged to the following duties: Livestock judging team vf three, Forestry judging team of three, two delegates, one State Officer, and one alternate.
Competing against boys with far more experience, we had to * struggle for the fifth position. However, the boys being keyed up with an' ardent spirit and a grim determination, we departed from the convention with a 4” by 6" silver plaque for having placed fifth in the State. Our forestry judging team, consisting of Leslie Daniels, Clyde , Duvall, a nd Thomas Carpenter won third , place and a 12” by 9” gold plaque in competition with thirty teams — throughout Virginia.* -
