. People have been rushing toward the cities during the past 10 years, and it began to look like the end of Virginia’s historic asset, the small town.
But tucked away ip the census figures is some heartening news. A good portion of these restless souls never got to the cities. Half a million stopped off in small towns and villages, a third as many as were already there.
Some were farmers’ sons and daughters and hired hands, tired of things as they knew them and seeking new horizons.
Some were called by new industries taking to the countryside in the last decade 6r so, and bringing over a billion and a half dollars in . new wages with them.___
Some came out from town to be bigger frogs in smaller ponds, and brought a hankering for city living with them.
