nere is a significant cnange in the law as it affects the farm worker. Prior to 1955, only the regular farm workers were under social security. Beginning Janu-, ary 1, 1955, all farm workers who are paid at least $100 in a year by a farm operator are covered under social security. Two percent of total wages up to $4200 in a year will be withheld by the farm operator from wages paid such ;farm workers. The farm operator will add a like amount as his share of the tax, and will file the necessary reports with the Internal Revenue Service. This new law provides most farm workers and their families the same protection under, social security that other workers have had for several years.
It should be remembered that both these changes are compulsory. It is, therefore, important that farm operators maintain adequate records for use in filling the necessary tax returns. If a farm operator or a farm worker has never had a social security card or has lost his card, he should get an application from the local post office or from any social security . office. The completed application should be mailed to your social security office.
