There were 321 more applications forscrvices and financial assistance during August than during July, and most of these were, requests for services and foster care. Requests for financial assistance in old age assistance, aid to _the permanently and totally disabled” arid general relief totalled - 196 less than July, and .requests for aid to dependent children were 104 more than that month.
There were 890 more children receiving child welfare services at the end of August, 1954, than in the same month of 1953, the Superintendent said. Services to 9,867 children were given by welfare departments in Virginia during August.
These included adoption studies and placements, foster placements, probation supervision, supervision for the Department of Welfare and Institutions, and other services._ ' •
Total public assistance cases in August rose to 37,576 from 37,409 in July. Total payments for August were $1,513,014, up $19,027 from July. '
