Response continues to be poor to the article in the Rappahannock Sews (this paper) on Thursday, October IS, 1956, and information distributed to the pupils at Rappahannock County High School, urging Polio Vaccine for all in the 0 through 19 year age

group. | Very few in the teen-age group (13 through 19) have had any vaccine. Polio Vaccine has been proven^ safp and effective j in reducing paralytic poliomyelitis. In a report on entire United States through the week ending October 20, 1956 there have been 13,537 cases of Polio compared to 25,716 cases for the same length of time in 1955, or 47.36%fewer; cases.

In this report there have been 5,789 cases of Paralytic polio compared to 9,005 cases in 1955 or 35.7% fewer cases. No cases of Paralytic Polio or death have been reported in any case that had received the complete series of i three doses of Polio Vaccine,- though there wens some who had not completed the recommended three doses, but not early enough to build up enough of the protective antibodies stimulated by Polio Vaccine.

There is not enough time before the school year is over for the 3 doses to be given in the schools. A three dose Schedule: First dose now; Second dose 4 weeks later Third dose no less than 7 months after the second, making the third dose due in late June.

There is time to complete; the three dose series before polio begins to increase, usually in tnidJulv. ' .1

Polio clinics will be set up in the High School if enough requests are made by means of “Immunization Permission Record" signedj by parent or guardian. This permission blank may be used and blanks are available at the Health Department or High School.
