Are We To Lose Another Helpful To County Agency Through “Lack Of Interest”
The Red Cross meeting held x Monday evening October 29th at the Court House was very poorly attended. Those there, however,’ realized more than ever; (From the Home Service Chairman’s report) 1st The importance of the Red Cross Program to the County; 2nd Their duty to their boys in the Armed Services. It was pointed out that the Charter of the Red Cross explicitly states that a chapter must have a ' Home Service Chairman, and that he must, among other things, do „ all he can to help servicemen and . their families whenever the needa rises. ( That the County Chapter has almost censed to function, is a fact known to many. To hear that our Home Service Chairman was meeting the needs of Servicemen in the coynty, in spite of the lack of cooperation, was most encouraging to those who Were interested enough , tqjtftend, tbsmeeting: - - » .. Believing . that the citizens of Rappahannock * are interested in their boys'ipducted into the Armed Services, the Rappahannock News has been ' able to contact the families in two '“ of the cases and has gotten the following reports. ' Rje—The family of CharKe Smoot, who died in University Hospital, Charlottesville, on September 12, 1956. One serviceman of the family was in a Texas camp, another at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Both G.Ij were notified and were able to get home and be with theif family at the funeral service. Members of the family of thft deceased were most appreciative.
Re~Extension of leave o f^, Lawrence O. Freeman, Westovev Air Force Base, Mass. Lawrence was home on leave, there vs a crippled brother (hejiad lost a leg") in Philadelphia. At the request of ‘ his mother, Lawrence went to Philadelphia and brought his brother home. After he reached home, trouble developed in the '* other leg and an operation was neccontinned
