Extended
Supplied by the Republican Party of Rappahannock County as a public service. Social Security ha* been much extended under President Eisenhower. The important changes (1) extend the system to many previously uncovered self-employed persons; (2) enable women to draw benefits at age 62; and (3) provide disability benefits for the first time. To pay for these additional benefits, the tax rate will be boosted. The increase is Vi of 1 % to both employees and employers on the first $4,200 of wages. This makes the tax rate 2*4 % for each , starting in 1957. For the self employed, the increase will be 3/8 of 1 % on the first $4,200 of income, making the tax rate 33/8% starting in 1957. Now covered for the first time "'are dentists, lawyers, optometrists, veterinarians, osteopaths, chiro-l praetors, and other professional groups—but physicians are still excluded.
Coverage for these new groups is retroactive to Jan. 1, 1956— therefore they must pay the 3% on this year’s income. In return, those persons who have reached retirement age (65 for men, 62 for women) will be eligible to completely retire with the maximum benefit as early as April, 1957, if they have net earnings of at least $4,200 in each of 1956 and the first two quarters of 1957.
