ALMOND’S STAR RIDES HIGH '
The big news of the past week to most*Virginians came not from Hungary or Syria, or the other “hot spots” of the world, ' but from the Old Dominion itself. Attorney General J. Lindsay Almond. Jr., who has announced himself a candidate for Governor some time ago, received the nod from the Bvrd organization. - - ' ’ ).
In announcing himself originally, Mr. Almond displayed a good deal of courage and personal initiative. It was far from certain at the time that the Byrd forces would back him. Curiously '» , -enough, the “organisation” has always been rather cool toward Mr. Almond. He was the logical candidate in the last gubernator, ial election, but in deference to the party, refrained from running. .Even now, the all important, endorsement by the organization appears reluctant. Still, he has it, and barring a great upset, should be the next man to occupy the Governor’s mansion.
We wish our neighbor from Orange well. We feel he is highly qualified for the position, and that his talents are particularly needed in the times immediately ahead. Too long have the Counties been left to root for themselves in the increasingly difficult school situation. County officials are confused and bewildered by the failure of the State to formulate any definite state-wide policy as a framework to which they can turn. We are confident that under Mr. Almond, a definite policy will be adopted; that the individual counties will be given a firm framework as a guide in school planning, and that progress in this field will be made.
