The development and progress of dairying has been woven through the pages of American history since, with milk and milk foods maintaining their importance in our economy and diet for more than 350 yearsr
The Spanish and early Vikings who first touched on our shores realized the necessity of fresh dairy foods. They brought cattle with them, but by the time England began to colonize our eastern seaboard no traces of the Viking animals remained, while the Spanish cattle migrated thtrough Mexico to become the basis of the great Longhorn beef herds.
Records indicate that the first shiploads of Settlers coming to Jamestown, Virginia, neglected to bring cows. The privation and disease which accompanied their struggles soon convinced them of the vital importance of cattle in their fight for existance.
