According to the most reliable records, the. one room country school house, situated at the north end oi Long- Mountain and know as ‘‘Mt. Salem School" is the first rf its kind built in Rappahannock County.
It is just a short distance from ‘‘Old Alt. Salem Church” atid is said jto have been built after the “Holtzman Private School”, which was in the same community as the church, yvas closed.
A school for colored people, of practically the same size and design was built at the south end of Long Mountain. A survey of the whole .. country shows rhat the churches and schools were nearly always located close together and shared the same names. In Rappahannock it was Forest Grove Church and Forest Grove School, Oakley Church and Oakley School, Sycamore Church and Sycamore School. Always they were togethei.
Those- who were active in the churches worked to build up the schools. The school teachers helped in the Sunday Schools and often led the “mid-week prayer meeting.”
The Mt. Salem School enjoyed, . over a long period, a splendid record. Patrons were co-operative, and it has been said by many, that there were no really bad boys in the school, consequently it was never difficult to secure a teacher,, as was the case in some rural Schools^
The late George F. Kinsey of •^Jessamine Hill” was a member of the County School Board for a ; number of years, and took a great interest in the little schuof that was only a short distance from his home. At times the teacher stayed
