at “Jessamine Hill’’ and Mr. Kinsey’s grandson would go to and from school with her. Teachers could always count on Mr. Kinsey for help with any problems that might arise.
Some of-the children rode to school.most of them walked. Bessie Rowles always arrived On the “Rowles donkey”_facing jts rear end,^explaining that she could use “the persuader" (a stout switch) better if she rode that way. Her arrival..._.and departure were great evehts of thf day.
Among'the teachers who taught the three R’s at Mt. Salem were Miss Fannie Anderson, who boarded with the Shotwell family, going to her home on the Richmond Road for the weekend. Miss Elizabeth Harris, who stayed in the Kinsey home..._Miss Ma?es Dudley, who was with Mr. and Mrs. C. Dudley Wood at “Hillside” during the week and rode their much loved saddle horse, “Bird” to and from school. She recalls that she opened and shuit ten gates going to and from school and that hei classes were from the ABC group to the eightn grade.
Other teachers were Miss Mary Bruce, who stayed at “Jessamine Hill” and Miss Louemma Carter who rode horseback from her home in town, (opening and shutting ten gates also), frequently taking up behind her on her horse a small boy who was walking to school.
One snowy, windy day as they were riding along, snow caused the teacher to cough violently. The coughing over, she said to the small lad behind her, “O, please excuse me, Tommie.” O runted the boy. “Well you sure ain’t done nothin’ to me.”
It was the custom with many schools to have a “Friday Program”. with school closings little early. Patrons and school officials were always welcome and sometimes came. The children recited..... acted in little plays and sang. Quite an effort was made to have every child participate in some way. ; At Christmas time and at the close of school there war. always a “treat”. One year a big candy making was decided upon for the closing day. The recipe selected called for pounds and pounds of brown sugar.grated chocolate_ fresh butter and heavy cream. The teacher was to bring the ‘•ugar and chocolate. The children were to crack the walnuts and bring the butter and cream.
