One of the most important and interesting symbols of our government is the bald eagle. This famous bird has its proud portrait on alnlost every emblem of out government. The eagle is shown with a bundle of arrows in his right claw. This stands for America as a strong nation, a nation always prepared for an enemy’s attack. The eagle’s portrait is on flags, coins, stamps, certificates, and as I said, almost every emblem' of our government.
Justice’s symbol is a scale equal on both sides. It means that everybody should have equal justice. A friend of mine told me that before and during World War II, many of his relatives living in Germany were shot or put in concentration camps just because they did not agree with Hitler or the Nazi party, or .because itheir |religion was different. This is one of the most maddening examples of injustice I have ever heard. In a country such as Germany, they did not have the great freedoms which the symbols represent.
"Uncle Sam” is the cartoon symbol of our government. I had a friend once who was a cartoonist. Whenever he Wanted to draw a symbol representing pur Government, he would draw “Uncle Sam.”
The Statue of Liberty is on Bedloe’s Island. It is ihere to welcome immigrants, entering the country. You would never guess what could be going on in an immigrant’s mind when he sees the Statueof Liberty, so I will tell you. To an immigrant, America means peace and security, equal justice for all. It means fairness, the right to vote, the right to worship God as we please. It means justice, it means freedom and liberty. All these great freedoms and rights we rarely think about. We do not realize that we are really the most fortunate people in all the world because we live in such a land. Yet the immigrant thinks of all this; he thinks how lucky he will be to live in a country with the freedoms that these symbols represent.
