Today when we see stained glass which is so blank from the outside in the daytime and equally blank from the inside at night, we tend to forget that it was developed as an aid to worship and that, at the time it was developed, worship normally occured inside a church during the day.
And, of course, it is during the day that stained glass is at its most glorious when seen from with in a church. Its richness was immediately recognized from the time of its earliest use, for its manufacture quickly spread to all the Christian areas of Europe.
There are not many examples of medieval glass in this country, and even fewer examples of a complete window. In 1955 the . Virginia Museum of Fine Arts was especially fortunate in being able to purchase, through the Williams Fund, an entire stained glass window of the 14th Century from St. Leonhard in Lava-'tcale, Carinthia, Austria.
Not only did the Museum find an entire window, but the window, divided into six major panels, has five of those panels executed at the same time and from the same work shop. They depict, reading from left to right and from bottom to
