Wheat Referendum
Being Held Today
Wheat producers will vote • today (Thursday, August 24) on whether or not marketing quotas will be in effect on the 1962 wheat crop, M. C. Gore, County Office Manager, Rappahannock County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee has announced.
Quotas for the crop were proclaimed by the Secretary of Agriculture on May 12, but a date for the referendum was not set until recently.
If at least two-thirds of the growers who vote in the referendum approve quotas, producers who comply with their farm wheat acreage allotment will be eligible for price support at a national average of $2 per bushel. They will also be eligible to participate in a special 1962 wheat program in which payments will be made for diverting wheat acreage to conservation use. If quotas are not in effect, producers who do not comply with their allotments will Be subject to marketing quota penalties, denied price support, and not eligible fo* payments under the special 1962 wheat program, the County Office Manager said.
If quotas are not approved by the necessary tow-thirds of growers voting there will be no limit on marketings and price support at 50% of parity will be available to producers who comply with the farm acreage allotments.
Producers eligible to vote in the referendum include those who have produced in excess of 13.5 acres of wheat in at least one of the years 1959, 1960 or 1961..
