Serving aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk undergoing training operations at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, is George D. Fincham, seaman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam H. Fincham of Sperryville Va.
The giant carrier, high as a 25story building and 1,047 feet long, is scheduled to round Cape Horn on her way to join the Pacific Fleet. Her defensive armament consists of Terrier guided missiles.
Marine Pvt. Freddie M. Jenkins, son of Mr. and Mfs. Fred W. Jenkins of Sperryville, Va., completed recruit training July 17, at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S. C.
The intensive 12-week training period includes drill, bayonet training, physical conditioning, parades and ceremonies and Marine Corps indoctrination.
Three weeks are spent on the rifle range where recruits fire the M-l rifle and receive instructions on other basic marine infantry weapons.
Serving in the Atlantic abroad the escort destroyer USS Waller is K. D. Clater, seaman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Clater of Sperryville, Va.
The Waller was one of many Navy Ships operating along the Cape Canaveral missile range during Project Mercury’s second successful prelude to orbiting a man in space.
