Sportsmen Urged To
Respect Landowners
Rights
The Virginia Game Commission urges sportsmen to respect the rights of landowners throughout the state during the coming fall hunting seasons.
The law clearly states that sportsmen must obtain permission from the landowner or person in charge before entering private lands to hunt. Chester Phelps, the executive director of the game commission, speaking for the commission, says, “We certainly hope that all those who participate in the fall hunting seasons will observe this law and cooperate with landowners by asking permission before entering private lands.”
‘'However, cooperation with the landowner must be carried further than simply asking permission to enter private lands,” Phelps said. He urged hunters to leave all gates as they are found, to be careful of fire hazards and livestock, to avoid driving vehicles across meadows and to bury all litter.
Virginia Hunters will notice as they sign their 1961-62 hunting licenses that this statement is made on the license: “NTo person shall hunt, fish or trap on posted property of another without first obtaining written permission therefor. No person shall hunt, fish or trap on unposted property of another without first obtaining oral permission therefor.”
