One hundred sixty forest fires burned 355 acres of forest land in the Northern Piedmont area in 1961. Of this total, 1 fire was reorted in Rapahannock County. These fires burned over 8 acres of forest land within the county.
1961 was the best year on record for the sixteen-county area; which includes Rappahannock, Culpeper, Madison, and Fauquier Counties. The second best year on record was in 1958 during which a total of 173 fires burned 445 acres of forest land. Snow and generally wet weather during most of the spring and fall months in 1961 accounted for the small number of fires, and the subsequent acreage burned.
Brush and trash burning was the largest single cause of fires during the past year. Thirty-five fires started from this cause to account for 22 percent of j£he total. Thirty-two fires originated on the rights-of-way of railroads to acl count for 20 percent. Other causes include twenty-nine fires from) smokers for 18 percent, eighteen incendiary fires for 11 percent, and thirteen fires from hunters for 8 percent. The remaining thirty
