pahannock Hunt and Mr. and Mrs. Durant, assembled from ten different hunt territories. Miss Iris Winthrop came from as far as the Myopia Hunt in Massachusetts; Stewart Wells, ex MFH Long: Lake Hounds, Wazata, Minn.; Josef Gardiner from Spring Valley
Hunt, Md.; and many others from | Virginia hunts such as Old Dominion, Piedmont, Warrenton, Casanova, Bull Run. Orange County and Potomac Hunts.
The cold temperatures plus a
generous snow <^ver made for thin scenting conditions, and though the hounds did get up a grey and run him out of the Jane Brown woods toward Witt Mountain, there were no sustained or consistent races. However, Rappahannock hounds worked hard over frozen pastures and through crusted wooded pastures to provide a pleasant day.
After three hours of hunting, the Durants’ house welcomed hunters, car followers, spectators, friends and family with true oldfashioned country hospitality. The stout and delicious fare of roast beef “done to perfection by the redoubtable Rudolph” fitted occasion and appetites to a tee.
A special treat was provided by the presence of Miss Gertrude Durant, now 94 years young and enjoying every moment of < a very hearty party.
Music brought forth the dancing talent of some youngsters such as Mr. and Mrs. Durant and Dr. and Mrs. O. K. Burnette in a twisting competition with some old hands from Mary Washington College.
Out-of-town guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Fletcher and Mr. and Mrs. J. R. DeBergh were Mrs. Sally White, Josef Gardiner of Washington, D. C. and Stewart Wells, Wazata, Minn. Mr. and Mrs. N. K. G. Tholand brought as their guest Count and Countess Lewenhaupt of the Swedish Embassy; Mrs. A. C. Randolph had Miss Winthrop of Boston and Gene Weymouth of Wilmington, Del. (a very famous trainer and steeplechase rider in the east). Other out-of-town guests were Mrs. Ralph Minnich, Mrs. Kauffman and Mr. Kauffman, Jr. of Charlottesville, the Mary Washington College Riding Group and Dr. and Mrs. J. Louis Humphries of Arlington. To many old timers , Saturday marked the 40th year that hunt meets have been held from "The Hill.”
