Lt. McNear received training in demolitions, communications, fieldcraft, survival, hand-to-hand combat, patrolling techniques and mountain, jungle, swamy and waterborne operations. The training included a 17-mile forced march with full field equipment. During the course McNear received inr struction at the Mountain Ranger Camp, Dahlonega, Ga., and the Florida Ranger Camp, Elgin Air Force Rase, as well as at the Infantry School, itself. The lieutenant entered the Army in June 1961.
Lieutenant McNear was graduated from Heidelberg American High School in 1955, and from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N. Y. in 1961.
