Forest Fire Sweeps

. A field and forest fire swept jjuough Jenkins Hollow Thursday our rang over more acreage and doing more damage than had been done by fires in Rappahannock County in five years. Four fire companies with eight pieces of equipment responded to the alarm thereby preventing what might have been a serious catastrophe.
About ten acres of fields were burned over and* six acres of woodland. Five thousand seedlings that were six or seven years old and had attained 10 foot heights, were completely destroyed along with a mily or so of fences. People in the hollow were making preparations Jto move out when the fire was gotten under control.
Amissville, Washington, Sperryville and Flint Hill fire companies answered the alarm. The fire was discovered by a lookout in the Red Oak fire tower about 1 p.m. This tower is manned through the spring and fall fire seasons.
After four days of above average temperatures, the country-side was extremely dry and once the blaze started the 10 to 25 mile winds whipped it up the mountain and the flames leaped across the roads and from field to field.
At about the same time another fire broke out nearby burning two acres. An additional two acres burned at Viewtown when children playing with matches started a fire. Apparently all of these fires were caused by carelessness.
