Trout Season Opens
In Shenandoah Park
R. Taylor Hoskins, Superintendent, announces the opening Of the 1962 trout fishing season in Shenandoah National Park at 12 noon, Eastern Standard Time, Saturday, April 7. The Park adheres to a policy of natural fish propagation so the streams are not stocked.
Only artificial lures, such as artificial flies, spinners, or bugs shall be used. Fishing with multiple hookfc (double, treble, or gang' hooks) is prohibited. No special Park license is required, but persons fishing within the Park must have in their possession an appropriate State of Virginia fishing license. A $3.00 trout fishing license, good only in Shenandoah National Park, may be obtained at any concession unit in the Park by residents and norf-residents. Panorama and Swift Rian are now open.
Trout under (9) inches in length shall not be retained. All undersized trout shall be immediately and carefully returned to the water. The limit of catch is 8 per day for each fisherman, and P ar k streams are open to trout fishing only. Park Superintendent Hoskins also reminds fishermen that State fishing licenses and all fish taken must be exhibited upon demand to any person authorized to enforce Park regulations, and all fishing tackle and gear used in connection with illegal fishing activity will be confiscated.
In April 1961, the Rapidan and Staunton Rivers in the Park were the first in the State of Virginia to be designated as Fish-for-Fun streams. This program is designed to meet the ever-increasing demand for recreational fishing. When sports fishermen get used to the idea of carefully returning trout to the stream, it is felt that they will find it as enjoyable and relaxing as though they were fishing for keeps.
