Extension Agronomists give the following timely forage topics: Cutting Alfalfa For High Quality The first cutting of alfalfa-gEass or alfalfa alone should be made while the hay or silage is higjh in digestibility rather than after the forage has become stemy and lower in quality. The preferred time of cutting usually comes early in may. The best way to determine when to make the first cutting is to watdh orchardgrass. Cut after orchardgrass has headed but before it blooms. Alfalfa will normally be in bud stage. The second, third and fourth cuttings of alfalfa should be made at the 1/10 bloom stage.
