Forest fires in the Northern Piedmont area increased by approxiamtely 50 percent during the first six months of 1062. John Jackson, Northern Piedmont fire chief for the Division of Forestry, says that 158 forest fires were reported in the sixteen county area in 1962. These fires burned 692 acres of forest land. Only 107 fires were reported during the same period in 1961, burning only 254 acres of forest land.
