After his military service Roberts tried college again, this time at the University of Maryland, College Park. Of his college career, Roberts says, "I distinguished myself primarily by flunking out of college.’ At Mary, land, he discovered acting and the University theatre, appeared in four campus plays and forgot the books. In 1950, Roberts learned of the start of Arena Stage In Washington, D. C., auditioned and remained as a permanent member of the cast from October of that year to June, 1952. Then he returned to New York, appeared in several plays, toured in summer stock in Wisconsin, worked as a TV camera man in Baltimore and went back to New York. There, in Shakespearan productions he received attention and recognition for his acting ability. Going to Hollywood, Roberts won roles in several motion pictures and began to appear on television. NBC’s "Bonanza* followed and Roberts is now known throughout theland as "Adam Cartwright,* the tall, quiet member of the threesome of brothers. One of the Apple Blossom Festival’s largest crowds is expected to turn out here on May 3 to greet the TV star.
