man with a beautiful speaking voice could portray such an infamous character as Dillinger. He is also the man who made Elmer Gantry a memorable character on Broadway and who, for many years, was greatly loved as Editor Steve Wilson in the radio production of Big Town. His wife, Helen Shipman, began her career on the stage at the age of three. She starred in many musical comedies on Broadway, but is best remembered for her song hit, "Alice Blue Gown." While here first love was opera, it was in musical comedies and motion pictures that she won wide acclaim. It was in 1930, while playing in “Life is Like That,” that she met Edward Pawley, leading man of the play. They were married in 1937 and Helen Shipman retired from the stage. Mr. Pawley continued in motion pictures, stage and radio work until 1950 when they purchased a home at Rock Mills, near Castleton, Virginia. Their interest in the theatre is still keen and they often ,travel long distances to see old friends play familiar parts. They recently drove to Shady Grove, Maryland with a group of friends to see Robert Cummings in a musical comedy. Bob Cummings studied under Mr. Pawley at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.
