He used this number until he retired and with it earned the credits which entitle him and his wife to social security retirement benefits. Since all records in the social security office are confidential, written consent from Mr. and Mrs. Pawley was required in order to use their names. The purpose of social security is to pay benefits to those who have earned them, regardless of financial circumstances. Because many people misunderstand this, Mr. and Mrs. Pawley are happy to use their names to help us better inform the public.
