The reason Social Security4 Administration is so concerned about erroneous reporting is because of the possibility of loss of benefits by claimants when they reach retirement age or become disabled. Also, there is danger of loss of benefits by survivors in the event of death of the wage earner. If these employers do not improve their reporting they may be referred to the Internal Revenue for an investigation. If social security numbers are always obtained from new employees and these numbers are copied correctly on the wage reports, the employees will get full credit for their earnings.
