The National Aeronauties and Space Administration has appointed Colonel V. John Lyle of Washington, Virginia, as Special Assistant to the Administrator of the Manned Space Flight Program. In that position he will have responsi bility for assisting in the over all management of all manned space flights, including the planned Appollo lunar landing. Colonel Lyle is a graduate of the University of Maryland and also holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Master of Laws degree from Georgetown University. He is a member of the Bar of the State of Florida. He is I also a graduate of the Defense Intelligence School in Washington, D. C., and attend ;ed the State Department’s Foreign Service Institute | there.

After serving as a combat [flyer in World War II he became one of the first jet pilots ■in the United States. In 1948 he was appointed to a diplo matic post with the United Nations’ Truce Commission to Palestine, and served in that country during the Arab[israeli conflict. \ In 1950 he was named as an [ Aide at the White House under President Truman and remain, [ed there until 1952. During the Korean conflict he again served as a jet fighter pilot and on one occasion, after shooting down two enemy jets in aerial battles, was forced to eject from his own burning jet behind enemy lines.
