Hatchery Ponds Open
To Angling May 1
Eight experimental ponds at the Game Commission’s Front Royal Fish Cultural Station near Waterlick will again be opened to public angling May 1, marking the third season that experimental evaluation of a 12 inch size limit on bass has been in progress at this facility, according to Fish Division Chief Jack Hoff man. A similar study of a 14 inch size limit was completed at this facility in 1964 and indi cared that this size limit improved the overall quality of both bass and bluegills with no loss in pounds per acre production. The ponds were stocked in 1965 with adult bass and blue gills in a ratio to simulate a natural fish population. No fish will be added during the experiment so the effects of the 12 inch size limit on the fish population can be evaluated. Four of the ponds have the 12 inch minimum size restriction on bass and four have no size limits so that differences in fish production can be compared. Regular daily creel limits of 8 bass and 25 bluegills apply. Angling is permitted from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on week days (closed Mon days), from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays and from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays. The season customarily closes on L a b o r Day.
