Silver service on the sideboard in the dining room at Spring House Farm is from Mr. D. B. Smith’s family and was originally made for Mr. William Smith, twice governor of Virginia. It was made as a gift for him from silver dollars in tokert of appreciation of the people of New Mexico for his public service in' their behalf. It was handcrafted by a silversmith In'New York and the floral decoration was made in France. It was used in Richmond during his second term as governor, around the time of the Civil War. William Smith was known throughout this section as “Extra Billy’'. He kept extra horses to insure service on schedule for his stage line and U.S. Government postal contracts.
