Choices Face

Grain Producers

Farmers who produce wheat and feed grains today were urged to “give serious consideratidn to their choices" in ASCS programs by H. S. Barksdale, Chairman, Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation County Committee. The Chairman pointed out that Secretary of Agriculture Orville L. Freeman recently said that program participation "is the key to improving the supply and price situation for 1968 grain crops" and that it will also protect livestock producers against overexpansion.

The goal of the Department of Agriculture in this regard is a reduction in wheat acreage and the diversion of more acres from corn and grain sorghum production than was the case in 1967. Grain programs in 1968 are aimed at "turning the supply situation around* as a means of strength ening farm prices. The 1968 Feed Grain Program is geared to an acreage that would produce about 2 to 3 percent less grain than will be in demand — in contra st to the 2 to 3 percent oversupply that depressed prices for the 1967 production.

The Secretary of Agriculture said that the feed grain objective should be met if participation is at least as high as in 1967 when 1.4 million farms were signed up for the program. Sign-up under the voluntary 1968 Wheat and Feed grain programs will begin on February 5 and continue through March 15, 1968. If participation in the 1968 voluntary wheat program is as extensive as in 1967, wheat plantings should reflect the 10 million-acre reduction in the national allotment, USDA officials estimate.

Tax Refunds Are

Not Automatic

You will not automatically receive a refund of tax withheld from your wages unless you file a tax return, said James P. Boyle, District Direcord of Internal Revenue for Virginia. A tax return is not required when the gross income received during the year is less than $600, Mr. Boyle said, but a return must be filed to obtain a refund of any Federal tax withheld. This advice applies particularly to students and other persons who worked only a part of the year. Forms 1040 or 1040A must be filed by everyone under 65 years of age whose gross income for 1967 was $600 or more. If the taxpayer is 65 or older, a return is required only if total income amounts to $1,200 or more.
