HEW Loans Help
College Students
During the current school year, Virginia college students are receiving Federal financial assistance through a combination of 14,500 loans, grants, and work-study jobs, Dr. Carl Seifert, Regional Ed ucational Commissioner of the U.S. Department of HEW in Charlottesville, Virginia announced today. Nationally, a little over one million students in 1,700 colleges and universities have borrowed over $1 billion under the National Defense Student Loan Program since it started in 1958. In addition fellowships worth $185 million have been awarded to 17,500 graduate students and over 175,000 students now participate in college workstudy programs. Dr. Seifert pointed out that in recent years new Federal programs to encourage and assist talented young people to continue their education beyond high school have been created and are beginning to pay off. “Although this assistance has helped advance university and college enrollment from 2.7 million in 1955 to 6.4 million last year,” Seifert said, “there are still many young people with the ability and desire to go on to college who are not doing so.” To some of these potential students, Fed eral assistance makes the difference — if they find out about it in time. Seifert noted that the cost of higher education had increased significantly. It now costs public college students an average of $1,068 a year and private college students $2,222 a year to attend school. Students in need of financial assistance can obtain informa tion about these Federal programs from the college of their choice when they apply for admission, which should be done now for the comirtg school year. Douglas for the purpose of constructing a highway, in Wakefield District, Rappahnnnock County, Virginia, as set tforth and described in the Petition filed herein on the 5th day of January, 1968, on Route 211, Project 0211-078-102, RW-203, and it appearing that Harlan P. Douglas and Jane P. Douglas are not residents of the State of Virginia. And an affidavit having been filed that the defendants named herein are not residents of the State of Virginia, it is ordered that they do appear within ten (10) days nfter due publication hereof und do whit may be necessary to protect their interests in this suit.
